Oh, What A Boo-tiful Day

After a chance meeting at a Halloween bash David Ewing popped the question to Kirsty Thomson at Lake Louise in Canada with a dazzling ring from Charles & Colvard. This total surprise stole Kirsty's heart and, despite putting their plans on hold to buy a house, the pair pulled off a truly wonderful wedding at Norwood Hall Hotel. Here’s Kirsty to tell us more…

“Our wedding organisation took a slight detour due to the pandemic but over a year of meticulous planning resulted in a day that was full of fun, relaxation, love and laughter – exactly as we pictured it.

We found ourselves immersed in a sea of choices but handled the majority ourselves instead of hiring a wedding planner. And with Norwood Hall stealing our hearts so early on we felt we didn’t need one. The incredible staff, particularly Aimee and Julie, were there to offer guidance whenever we needed it. We couldn’t have picked a better venue; the team was amazing.

We envisioned a relaxed day with a party atmosphere at night, which perfectly complemented the DIY décor crafted by yours truly. Bud vases, candles and a breathtaking floral arch adorned with white flowers, greenery and blue thistles tied everything together beautifully.

My bridal shopping experience was over quicker than I expected it to be because I found my classic yet subtly unique dress at Perfect Bridal Rooms on my very first visit! I paired it with a custom-made floral crown from RedRocks and pearl drop earrings. For David and his groomsmen, outfit shopping was a breeze as they opted for timeless navy kilts with wool jackets that suited the season.

The day before was mostly spent apart but we savoured quiet moments together when we could. David experienced Nando’s for the first time with his best man while I had dinner with my sister then a cosy evening at Norwood with matching pyjamas and a movie.

The wedding morning felt serene but it was over far too fast. I can still remember every minute leading up to our heartfelt humanist ceremony. We incorporated tartan from David's kilt and my family tartan as we tied the knot, creating a keepsake we'll cherish forever. Our rings also held a special significance. Mine was from Charles & Colvard, a keepsake from our Canadian adventures, while David’s was locally crafted in Portlethen, symbolising the various places we've called home.

Post-ceremony we enjoyed drinks, canapés and the melodies of the piper before we went off with our photographer to capture some of our favourite moments from a room above.

We joined our guests for delightful meal and heartfelt speeches then had our first dance to High on a Feeling by Blue Swede, an upbeat track that got everyone up on their feet with us. We were grateful for this as we only had enough dance moves to last the first half of the song!

The atmosphere was electric, it was such a fantastic evening, and you could feel the love in the room radiating from everyone. We took time to acknowledge our guests and family members who travelled to be with us and thanked them for being part of our day.

Our highlight was 100% leaving Norwood Hall as husband and wife, our faces aching from smiling so hard. After the wedding we went on a serene West Coast staycation that let us to bask in each other’s company after the whirlwind of our wedding day. It was the perfect end to the celebrations.

Our advice to future couples? Don't stress about the small stuff and follow your heart, even if it's not everyone's cup of tea!”
